Bashundhara Group of Bangladesh and Yin Group of China hold a strategic business discussion session at the residence of Bashundhara Group Chairman in the capital on Wednesday. After a fruitful discussion on investment in various sectors, the chairmen of both the groups along with their high officials posed for photographs.

বিপুল উৎসাহ-উদ্দীপনায় আজ ১০ জানুয়ারি উদযাপন করা হয় কালের কণ্ঠ’র অষ্টম প্রতিষ্ঠাবার্ষিকী। ইন্টারন্যাশনাল কনভেনশন সিটি বসুন্ধরার গুলনকশা হলে এ উপলক্ষে দিনভর চলে হৃদয়গ্রাহী ও বর্ণাঢ্য অনুষ্ঠানমালা; আনাগোনা হয় দেশের গুণী ও বিশিষ্টজনদের। উৎসব-অনুষ্ঠানের একটি পর্বে আয়োজন ছিল ‘মুক্তিযোদ্ধা সম্মাননা’। এতে ১৫ জন মুক্তিযোদ্ধাকে সম্মাননা জানায় কালের কণ্ঠ। উৎসবস্থল সাজানো হয়েছিল ১৫ মুক্তিযোদ্ধার ছবি দিয়ে। বিলবোর্ড ও ব্যানারে শোভা পাচ্ছিল তাঁদের ছবি।

২০১৭ সালের বিজয়ের মাস ডিসেম্বরে যে ১৫ জন মুক্তিযোদ্ধার সংগ্রাম ও বীরত্বের কাহিনি ছাপা হয় কালের কণ্ঠে, তাঁদেরকেই আজ পত্রিকাটির জন্মদিনে উত্তরীয় পরিয়ে, ক্রেস্ট ও ৫০ হাজার টাকা করে হাতে দিয়ে সম্মাননা জানানো হয়। সম্মাননাপ্রাপ্ত মুক্তিযোদ্ধারা হলেন পিরোজপুরের হাবিবুর রহমান শিকদার ও আবুল হাশেম হাওলাদার, ময়মনসিংহের আবুল হোসেন মোল্লা ও মো. চান মিয়া, গাজীপুরের মো. হাতেম আলী, নীলফামারীর আলতাফ হোসেন, কুড়িগ্রামের আব্দুল কাদের, খুলনার শেখ ইলিয়াস, দিনাজপুরের মো. জসিম উদ্দিন, শেরপুরের গিয়াস উদ্দিন, চট্টগ্রামের মোস্তফা কামাল পাশা, মেহেরপুরের সিরাজ উদ্দীন, ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়ার মতিলাল বণিক, সুনামগঞ্জের সুশান্ত রঞ্জন ও ফরিদপুরের হেমায়েতউদ্দিন তালুকদার।

সম্মাননা পেয়ে অভিভূত মুক্তিযোদ্ধারা। অভিভূত অভ্যাগত অতিথিরাও। অনুভূতি জানাতে গিয়ে ভাষা হারিয়ে ফেলেন সম্মাননাপ্রাপ্তরা। মেহেরপুরের মুক্তিযোদ্ধা সিরাজ উদ্দীন বলেন, ‘দেশের জন্য আমরা যে ত্যাগ স্বীকার করেছি, জীবন বাজি রেখে যুদ্ধ করেছি, তার স্বীকৃতি পেয়ে আনন্দিত, অভিভূত। কালের কণ্ঠ যে সম্মান দিল, তা পাব কখনো ভাবিনি। এ পত্রিকার প্রতি আমার বিশেষ কৃতজ্ঞতা।’

অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথি ছিলেন তথ্যমন্ত্রী হাসানুল হক ইনু। উপস্থিত ছিলেন তথ্য প্রতিমন্ত্রী তারানা হালিম, বসুন্ধরা গ্রুপের চেয়ারম্যান আহমেদ আকবর সোবহান, কালের কণ্ঠ সম্পাদক ইমদাদুল হক মিলন, বাংলাদেশ প্রতিদিন সম্পাদক নঈম নিজাম ও কালের কণ্ঠ’র নির্বাহী সম্পাদক মোস্তফা কামাল।

কালের কণ্ঠ’র অগ্রযাত্রার প্রশংসা করে তথ্যমন্ত্রী হাসানুল হক ইনু বলেন, অনেক সরকার সমালোচনায় মনঃক্ষুণ্ন হয়; কিন্তু আমরা তাদের দলে নই। চোখ দিয়ে দেখি, কান খুলে শুনি। ভুল, ত্রুটিবিচ্যুতি গণমাধ্যমে উঠে এলে আমরা তা শুধরে নিই। এই সরকারের আমলে ৭০০ নতুন পত্রিকার সঙ্গে বেশ কিছু টেলিভিশন চ্যানেল অনুমোদন পেয়েছে। আমাদের প্রত্যাশা, বিকশিত গণমাধ্যমের হাত ধরে স্বচ্ছ ও জবাবদিহিমূলক গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠিত হবে।

সাংবাদিকদের তথ্য পরিবারের সদস্য হিসেবে অভিহিত করে তথ্য প্রতিমন্ত্রী তারানা হালিম বলেন, ‘বন্দুকের নলের মুখে সেনা সরকারের আমলেও সত্য তথ্য উপস্থাপন করেছেন অনেক সাংবাদিক। মুক্তিযুদ্ধের পক্ষের আদর্শ হিসেবে কাজ করছেন তাঁরা। বাংলাদেশের ব্র্যান্ডিং যেন সাংবাদিকদের হাত ধরে হয়, এটাই আমাদের প্রত্যাশা।’

বসুন্ধরা গ্রুপের চেয়ারম্যান আহমেদ আকবর সোবহান বলেন, ‘১৯৭১ সালে দেশ স্বাধীন হওয়ার পর থেকে দেশে চলছে স্বাধীনতার পক্ষ ও বিপক্ষের শক্তির লড়াই। কালের কণ্ঠ প্রতিষ্ঠার প্রথম দিন থেকে আমাদের আদর্শ স্বাধীনতার পক্ষে লড়াই। এখনো স্বাধীনতার বিপক্ষের শক্তি মাথাচাড়া দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করছে। আর যেন স্বাধীনতাবিরোধীপক্ষের গাড়িতে জাতীয় পতাকা না ওড়ে সে জন্য আমাদের সবাইকে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের আদর্শে কাজ করে যেতে হবে।’

কালের কণ্ঠ সম্পাদক জনপ্রিয় কথাসাহিত্যিক ইমদাদুল হক মিলন বলেন, ‘মুক্তিযুদ্ধই ছিল আমাদের সুসময় এবং চরম দুঃসময়ও। ওই একবারই আমরা সবাই ঐক্যবদ্ধ হয়েছিলাম, কিছু রাজাকার ছাড়া। আর তখনই ৩০ লাখ স্বজন হারিয়েছি আমরা। ওই সময় পাকিস্তানিরা যে নির্যাতন চালিয়েছে তার ইতিহাস পৃথিবীতে আর নেই। সেই মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনা নিয়ে এগিয়ে চলেছে কালের কণ্ঠ।’

বাংলাদেশ প্রতিদিন সম্পাদক নঈম নিজাম বলেন, ‘ইস্ট ওয়েস্ট মিডিয়া গ্রুপ মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনায় শাণিত প্রতিষ্ঠান। এই প্রতিষ্ঠানের প্রথম পত্রিকা কালের কণ্ঠ। শুরু থেকেই পত্রিকাটি পাঠকের হৃদয় জয় করে চলেছে। ইস্ট ওয়েস্ট গ্রুপের প্রতিটি গণমাধ্যমের উদ্দেশ্য সত্য তথ্য মানুষের সামনে তুলে ধরা। তথ্য-প্রযুক্তি বিকাশের কারণে সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যম ও অনলাইনের যুগে চ্যালেঞ্জের মুখে পড়েছে প্রিন্ট মিডিয়া। এই চ্যালেঞ্জকে মোকাবেলা করে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে কালের কণ্ঠ।’

কালের কণ্ঠ’র নির্বাহী সম্পাদক ও জনপ্রিয় কথাসাহিত্যিক মোস্তফা কামাল সঞ্চালনা করেন এ পর্ব। সবাইকে প্রতিষ্ঠাবার্ষিকীর শুভেচ্ছা জানিয়ে তিনি বলেন, ‘জন্মলগ্ন থেকেই মুক্তিযুদ্ধের আদর্শ ও চেতনায় কাজ করছে কালের কণ্ঠ। বস্তুনিষ্ঠ সংবাদ পরিবেশন শুধু নয়, শুরু থেকে মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের পাশে দাঁড়িয়েছে পত্রিকাটি। জনপ্রিয় দৈনিক হিসেবে কালের কণ্ঠ অর্জন করেছে পাঠকের ভালোবাসা।’

এর আগে অনুষ্ঠানে সূচনা সংগীত পরিবেশন করেন জনপ্রিয় সংগীতশিল্পী ফাহমিদা নবী। এরপর সম্মাননা প্রদান শেষে জমকালো সংগীতানুষ্ঠানের মধ্য দিয়ে শেষ হয় দিনভর এ আয়োজন। অনুষ্ঠান প্রাণবন্ত করে তোলে জনপ্রিয় শিল্পী সালমার সুরেলা কণ্ঠ।

Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan has asked all newsmen of East West Media Group to work independently.

While inaugurating the 1st founding anniversary programme of Capital FM 94.8 at 10:30am on Monday, the Kar Bahadur asked the newsmen to work freely and not to produce or circulate any false information as baseless reports cast an adverse impact on the entire population of a country.

“People of the county believes that The news outlets under the group always publish true and verified news, so you should not circulate any false information”, the Bashundhara Group Chairman further said.

To the radio personnel, he said, “We have offered you full liberty to run the media. Those who have been given responsibility should possess the station as their own.

As members of a family, you will work with us for life.”

“You should vanguard the quality always”, Bashundhara Group chairman added.

The BG chairman continued: “We believe that Bashundhara Group is a family and we all are the members of the family. We work unitedly and that’s why we are progressing rapidly compared with other media outlets in the country.”

Sector commanders and freedom fighters on Friday urged all to unite the nation in spirit of the Liberation War that cost 30 lakh lives, violation of 6 lakh women within nine-month mass fighting forty six years ago.

At an honorary reception programme in the city, sector commanders and other eminent freedom fighters expressed their desire of democratic and discrimination-free nation which was dreamt by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Bengali newspaper Bangladesh Pratidin organised the event titled ‘Lifetime Achievement’ to honour the Liberation War Heroes. Seventeen super heroes who fought against Pakistani perpetrators with arms, writings and cultural activities during liberation movement.

Cabinet Secretary of the first Government of Republic Bangladesh and Prime Minister’s Advisor Hossain Toufique Imam was the chief guest while Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan and Bangladesh Pratidin Editor Naem Nizam were present on the occasion.

The lifetime achievement recipient freedom fighters are – Air vice Martial Abdul Karim Khandker, Major General Kazi Mohammed Safiullah, Major Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, Lieutenant Colonel Abu Osman Chowdhury, Colonel Zafar Imam, Major Muhammad Shahjahan Omar, Colonel Gaffar Haldar, Comoder AW Chowdhury, Scoadron Leader Liakat Ali Khan, Group Captain Shamsul Alam, Kamrul Hasan Bhuiyan, Commander Khalilur Rahman, Mamunur Rashid, Major Akhtaruzzaman, Kamal Lohani, Zafarullah Chowdhury, Mubashwir Hossain.

Adressing the function, PM’s Advisor HT Imam said,” three words– Bangladesh, Bangabandhu and Independence are synonyms.

Our liberation was a mass fighting where people from all walks of life participated with a single vision of ‘independence’. Under leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, our four national leaders led the nation forward.”

Imam, cabinet secretary of then government, urged journalist to mention their cabinet as First Government of People Republic Bangladesh’ rather than the ‘War-time Government’, ‘Mujib Nagar Sarkar’ and so on.

Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan said Bangladesh will always remember the contributions of the freedom fighters who dedicated themselves for the birth of an independent nation and go on to fulfill their dreams.

“Bangladesh is moving forward with the inspiration from you (freedom fighters). Once someone termed our country as ‘Bottomless Basket’ but now the world is appreciating the progress of Bangladesh economy, it could be possible for the motivations come from freedom fighters.

He said that every freedom fighter is himself a history which patron Bangladesh to establish a progressive nation.

The chairman also focused on his vision to keep sprite of Liberation War in every media outlets led by his company.

In address of welcome, Bangladesh Pratidin Editor Naem Nizam said freedom fighters are the creators of the word ‘Bangladesh’.

Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan said on Saturday that the condition of banks which are being run under Islamic shariah is better than that of other banks.

He made the remarks while addressing a customers’ conference held at International Convention City, Bashundhara in the capital on the occasion of the 22nd founding anniversary of Social Islami Bank Limited (SIBL).

Mentioning that there is a great problem in the country’s banking sector, he said the state of three to four new banks is very moribund apart from some old banks.

But the condition of the banks which follow Islamic banking is well till now, as the rate of their default loan is the lowest than other banks.

Welcoming the new SIBL board, the chairman of Bashundhara Group, a leading business conglomerate of the country, said those who have taken charge of the bank are established.

They will work well, he hoped.

Praising the SIBL banking activities, he said the bank also stands by customers during their rainy days.

The conference was inaugurated by cutting a mega cake in the evening. Jatiya Party Chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad, Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, SIBL Chairman Prof Anwarul Azim Arif, Managing Director Quazi Osman Ali, Islami Bank Chairman Arastoo Khan and Managing Director Abdul Hamid Miah, among others, were present on the occasion.

Top officials of different banks and some 7,000 guests were also present at the function.

The SIBL started its operation on November 22, 1995, focusing on banking service as per Islamic Shariah.

Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hossain Manju on Saturday said Bangladesh started its own initiatives for mitigating negative impacts of climate change instead of looking at the developed world for help.
“The government is now providing support for building environment-friendly infrastructures. Bangladesh did not wait for the well-off nations’ help.

Rather it started working to protect the environment with its own initiatives,” Manju commented.
He was addressing the inauguration ceremony of a three-day Green Convention & Expo 2017 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) as the chief guest.
Bangladesh Infrastructure Finance Fund Ltd (BIFFL) has organised the event. This year, the objective of the Convention and Expo is to promote the widespread use of green technologies in energy-intensive industries.
Bashundhara Cement and King Brand Cement were the platinum sponsors of the event. Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan was also present at the inauguration ceremony. He visited different stalls at the expo.
Addressing the function, the minister also said Bangladesh has already created its own funds to protect the environment.
“The commitment the heads of more than 200 countries made in Paris to mitigate the risks of climate change has not been fulfilled as it had no legal bindings,” he pointed out.
However, China and France strongly came forward to this end in spite of other developed nations reluctance, he added.
Manju also informed that financial support is being provided through BIFFL to support environment-friendly ventures like green brick kilns and eco-friendly industries.
Citing a WB study, World Bank Country Director Qimiao Fan informed that the study found 53 lakh coastal population are at risk of climate change impacts in Bangladesh.Mentioning the country’s outstanding economic growth for a decade, he said sustaining the growth requires the development of people in every part of the country.
He assured that the WB is committed to providing financial assistance to environment-friendly development schemes in Bangladesh. He informed that the lender will provide $2 billion financial assistance to Bangladesh in next three years in the sector.
Despite having resource constraint, Bangladesh has to invest more in improving environment-friendly infrastructure, commented ADB’s Alternative Executive Director Mahbub Ahmed.
Although Bangladesh is contributing the least to global carbon emission, it is the worst victim of negative impacts of climate change, repented Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir.
He informed that the central bank has taken up a number of initiatives to promote green financing in the country.
He said banks and financial institutions are being encouraged to channel green funds for which the central bank has already indentured 52 green financing products under eight categories.
Presenting the keynote paper at the event, A Atiq Rahman, executive director of Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS), said Bangladesh will require skilled manpower, technology transfer and financing to fight climate change impacts.
Bangladesh has made progress in renewable energy use as 45 lakh local people now use solar power, he informed.
Chief Representative of JICA in Bangladesh Takatoshi Nishikata, Finance Secretary and BIFFL Chairman Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury, among others, spoke on the occasion which was chaired by Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Kazi Shofiqul Azam.
Last year, BIFFL organized a Green Brick Convention 2016 to promote green technologies for the country’s brick sector.
In this year’s expo, suppliers of the green and sustainable technologies will get the opportunity to showcase their innovative business solutions to their target customers through a total of 71 stalls.
The convention will also provide a platform for the participants to share experiences from global best practices and collate recommendations for the policymakers to formulate enabling policies and regulations towards fostering the green movement in Bangladesh.
Dr Ainun Nishat, Professor Emeritus, Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research of BRAC University, was the moderator of the panel discussion in the convention. S.M. Formanul Islam, the CEO of BIFFL, delivered the vote of thanks.
